These incidents, ranging from medical emergencies to acts of vandalism and severe accidents, highlight the city's dynamic and sometimes unpredictable challenges.
Cardiac Arrest at São Martinho Hotel
On the morning of January 30, 2026, an 80-year-old tourist suffered a cardiac arrest at a hotel in São Martinho, a vibrant area in Funchal known for its hospitality and scenic views. The incident prompted an immediate response from the Emergency Medical Intervention and Rescue (EMIR) team and the Bombeiros Voluntários Madeirenses. Four firefighters arrived with two vehicles and successfully resuscitated the man before transporting him to the Hospital Dr. Nélio Mendonça.
Arson Attacks on Waste Containers
On the night of January 29 and into the early hours of January 30, several waste containers were set on fire across different locations in Funchal. The Bombeiros Sapadores do Funchal were called out first to the area near Hotel Meliã, followed by Rua da Carreira and Rua de São Francisco, where a total of five containers were deliberately ignited. Nine firefighters responded with a heavy vehicle and an ambulance to manage the situation.
Severe Motorcycle Accident at Amparo
