Emergency services in Madeira have been at the forefront, battling fires, responding to accidents, and facing tragic losses, highlighting their crucial role on the island.

In recent days, the island of Madeira has witnessed a series of incidents requiring the urgent attention of local emergency services. The Bombeiros Voluntários da Ribeira Brava e Ponta do Sol have been particularly active, demonstrating their dedication and efficiency in responding to various emergencies.

Fire in Ribeira Brava

On January 26, 2026, a fire broke out in the area known as Apresentação, in Ribeira Brava. The local volunteer firefighters quickly mobilized to combat the blaze. Seven firefighters, equipped with a heavy and a light fire engine, worked tirelessly for two hours to bring the fire under control, preventing it from spreading further.

Car Accident in Canhas

Earlier this week, on January 24, a car accident occurred on the regional road near Canhas, as a car veered off the road and collided with a parked vehicle. The driver, a man in his 30s, initially lost consciousness due to the impact. However, upon the arrival of emergency services, he regained consciousness but sustained facial injuries. He was promptly treated and transported to Hospital Dr. Nélio Mendonça for further care.

Tragic Loss in Ribeira Brava

On January 23, a man in his 70s experienced a cardiac arrest in Ribeira Brava. Despite the rapid response from the EMIR and local firefighters, the resuscitation efforts were unsuccessful, and the man tragically passed away. This incident underscores the critical need for prompt medical intervention in such emergencies.

These events highlight the vital role of emergency services in safeguarding the community and the continuous risks they face in their line of duty. The local authorities continue to urge residents and tourists alike to exercise caution and remain vigilant.
