Funchal Rescue Operation
On the evening of December 25, 2025, the Bombeiros Voluntários Madeirenses were called to Rua Pedro José de Ornelas in Funchal. A man in his 70s had fallen ill and was unable to seek help himself. The firefighters forced entry into the residence to provide the necessary assistance. After stabilizing the man, they transported him to Hospital Dr Nélio Mendonça for further treatment.
Fire in Ponta do Sol
Earlier in the evening, around 20:38, the Bombeiros Voluntários from Ribeira Brava and Ponta do Sol responded to a fire in the Poios area of Ponta do Sol. The blaze, suspected to have been caused by a hot air balloon or firework, was located on the hillside behind the old PSP station. Five firefighters, equipped with both a heavy and a light vehicle, took approximately two hours to extinguish the flames.
Tragic Discovery in São Roque
In a separate incident on December 24, 2025, emergency responders were dispatched to a home in São Roque, Funchal, where a woman in her 90s was found deceased. Despite the quick response, there was nothing that could be done to save her. The PSP has been involved in the investigation.
These incidents highlight the challenges faced by emergency services on Madeira Island, where the safety of its residents and visitors remains a top priority.
