Recent events in Madeira have kept local emergency services busy, from rescuing an unconscious tourist in Levada dos Balcões to addressing a gas leak in Funchal and a road closure in Curral das Freiras.

In recent days, Madeira Island has witnessed a series of incidents that have engaged local emergency services, highlighting their critical role in ensuring public safety and wellbeing.

Tourist Rescued in Levada dos Balcões

On December 29, 2025, a 57-year-old German tourist experienced a severe hypoglycemia episode while hiking on the renowned Levada dos Balcões, located in Ribeiro Frio. Initially assisted by two doctors who happened to be nearby, the tourist lost consciousness. Responding swiftly, the Santana Volunteer Firefighters deployed six personnel with two vehicles to the scene. The tourist, once stabilized, was transported to Dr. Nélio Mendonça Hospital for further care.

Gas Leak in Funchal

A day earlier, on December 28, 2025, the Funchal Fire Department responded to a suspected gas leak in a building on Rua Dr. Carlos Varela. Despite gas detection equipment failing to confirm the presence of gas, the intense odor prompted authorities to shut down the main gas supply to the building as a precaution. Nine firefighters with three vehicles ensured the situation was managed without incident.

Landslide Closes Road in Curral das Freiras

The morning of December 28, 2025, saw a landslide that resulted in the temporary closure of the Curral de Cima road before the local dam in Curral das Freiras. The Câmara de Lobos Volunteer Firefighters responded with two team members and a light vehicle. Thanks to the swift action and use of machinery from the local parish council, the road was reopened to traffic by 9 a.m.

Animal Rescue in São Gonçalo

In another incident, the Madeira Volunteer Firefighters successfully rescued a dog from a stream in Caminho do Pasto, São Gonçalo, on December 28, 2025. The dog was unharmed and safely returned to its owner thanks to the prompt efforts of two firefighters.
