A series of emergencies in Madeira saw firefighters responding to an assault, a house fire, and an alleged pedestrian accident. These incidents highlight the vital role of emergency services on the island.

In the early hours of February 17, 2026, Madeira's emergency services were called to handle multiple incidents across the island, underscoring the critical role of the Bombeiros Sapadores do Funchal in maintaining public safety.

Assault on Avenida Sá Carneiro

At approximately 5 a.m., emergency responders were dispatched to Avenida Sá Carneiro in Funchal, where an 18-year-old male was reportedly assaulted. The victim received on-site medical attention before being transported to Hospital Dr Nélio Mendonça for further care. The circumstances surrounding the assault remain under investigation by local authorities.

House Fire in SĂŁo Martinho

Earlier, at around 4 a.m., firefighters were called to a blaze in the attic of a residence located on Travessa das Quebradas de Baixo in SĂŁo Martinho. The fire was tackled by a team of 13 firefighters using four fire engines. Thankfully, there were no reported injuries, and the cause of the fire is currently being investigated.

Alleged Pedestrian Accident in Câmara de Lobos

In another incident at 2 a.m., emergency services responded to a report of a pedestrian accident on Estrada Vitória in Câmara de Lobos. A man under the influence of bloom—a substance commonly associated with altered states—claimed a vehicle ran over his foot. However, he declined medical transport to the hospital after the incident.

These events highlight the challenges faced by emergency services in Madeira, which play an indispensable role in ensuring the safety and well-being of both residents and visitors.
