On January 7, 2026, Madeira saw a series of emergency incidents that kept local authorities and emergency services busy. These events included a motorcycle accident in Funchal, a house fire in Santo António, and a car collision near Machico.

Motorcycle Accident in Funchal

In the afternoon, a motorcycle accident occurred on Rua de Santa Luzia, Funchal. The incident involved a foreign man in his 60s who sustained abrasions. He was promptly attended to by the Bombeiros Voluntários Madeirenses and transported to the Hospital Dr Nélio Mendonça for treatment.

House Fire in Santo António

Later that evening, at around 11 PM, the Bombeiros Sapadores do Funchal were called to tackle a house fire on Caminho do Laranjal Pequeno in Santo António. The fire, caused by a short circuit in a refrigerator located in a storage area, required the efforts of 11 firefighters and three vehicles to extinguish.

Car Collision Near Machico

Earlier that day, the Bombeiros Municipais de Machico responded to a car collision at the entrance of the via rápida, Machico. The accident involved two cars and resulted in a 26-year-old woman suffering cervical pain. She was taken to the Hospital Dr Nélio Mendonça for further medical evaluation.

These incidents highlight the critical role of local emergency services in ensuring public safety on the island. Despite the challenges, the coordinated efforts of the various firefighting and rescue teams underscored their readiness and efficiency in managing multiple emergencies.
