The death toll from recent earthquakes in Venezuela has risen, with significant losses in the Portuguese and Portuguese-descendant community. Efforts to provide aid and shelter are ongoing.

The devastating earthquakes that struck Venezuela on June 24th have led to a rising death toll, now standing at 2,954, according to Jorge Rodríguez, the President of the Venezuelan Parliament. The number of injured has also increased to 16,592.

Among the victims, the Portuguese community has been significantly affected, with the death toll of Portuguese and Portuguese-descendants in Venezuela now reaching 93. This has deeply impacted the overseas Portuguese community and has drawn attention to the need for international support.

Impact on the Portuguese Community

Reports indicate that 93 Portuguese nationals and people of Portuguese descent have lost their lives. This tragic loss highlights the strong connections between Madeira and the Portuguese diaspora in Venezuela, which dates back to the mid-20th century when many Madeirans emigrated to Venezuela in search of better opportunities.

Response and Relief Efforts

In response to the disaster, rescue operations have successfully saved 6,462 individuals who were trapped. Additionally, the Venezuelan government has established 80 temporary camps to provide shelter for the 16,309 people left homeless.

The Madeira government and other Portuguese authorities are coordinating with Venezuelan officials to offer assistance and support to the affected communities, emphasizing the urgency of providing aid to the Portuguese diaspora.

A Call for International Aid

Given the scale of the disaster, there is a growing call for international aid to support Venezuela in its recovery efforts. The Portuguese government, along with other international bodies, is urged to contribute to the relief operations, ensuring that those affected receive the necessary assistance.

This tragic event serves as a reminder of the vulnerability of communities living in earthquake-prone regions and underscores the importance of preparedness and international solidarity in times of crisis.
