The Madeira region witnessed significant financial losses due to cyber fraud in 2025, with damages nearing €2 million. The local police have launched measures to combat this growing threat.

In 2025, Madeira faced a substantial financial setback as cyber fraud incidents led to losses nearing €2 million. This alarming figure was reported by the Regional Command of the Public Security Police (PSP) of Madeira, highlighting a worrying trend in the region's cyber security landscape.

Compared to 2024, where losses were reported at €1,564,800, there was a marked increase to €1,999,655 in 2025. This spike reflects the growing sophistication and frequency of cybercriminal activities targeting individuals and businesses alike.

The PSP Madeira has initiated a monthly segment called 'Alerta Burla' to raise awareness and educate the public about the dangers and prevention of cyber fraud. This initiative aims to protect vulnerable groups, including families, the elderly, and workers, who are often the primary targets of such scams.

Cyber fraud, which encompasses a range of deceptive practices using digital channels to manipulate victims into transferring money, has become a pervasive issue worldwide. In Madeira, the rise in such activities underscores the need for heightened vigilance and improved cyber security measures.

Madeira, an autonomous region of Portugal, is not only a popular tourist destination but also home to a diverse population that includes many elderly residents. The local government and law enforcement agencies are working collaboratively to enhance public awareness and deploy resources effectively to mitigate this threat.
