Controversy Over Physiotherapy Consultation Limits in Madeira

In a recent development that has sparked significant controversy on Madeira Island, the Juntos Pelo Povo (JPP) party has alleged that the regional government's decision to limit physiotherapy consultations is driven by corporate interests rather than efficient management. This decision, according to JPP, disproportionately affects those who rely on public healthcare, particularly the elderly and low-income residents.
According to Élvio Sousa, Secretary-General of JPP, the move to restrict the prescriptions for subsidized physiotherapy and rehabilitation consultations to only physiatrists and pediatricians, while excluding orthopedists, neurologists, rheumatologists, and general practitioners, is not grounded in the need for efficient healthcare management as claimed by the Secretary of Health and Civil Protection, Micaela Freitas.
'This cut, which nothing has to do with efficient and rational management, but rather with corporatist interests, will severely harm patients and increase waiting times for medical care,' stated Élvio Sousa.
The opposition leader highlighted that the waiting list for physical medicine and rehabilitation services has surged by over 200% from 2015 to 2025, with only a third of initial consultations occurring in a timely manner. This situation exacerbates the challenges faced by those dependent on public healthcare, as they encounter prolonged waiting periods and bureaucratic hurdles, unlike those with financial means who can afford private treatment.
The debate has been intensified by the visit of AntĂłnio Manuel Lopes, the head of the Physiotherapists' Association, to Funchal for discussions aimed at finding solutions to this contentious policy. The JPP emphasizes the necessity of addressing these limitations to ensure equitable healthcare access for all residents of Madeira.
