The new mobility subsidy model has sparked a political uproar in Madeira, with claims of constitutional violations and insults to island residents. Local leaders demand immediate governmental action.

The implementation of a new mobility subsidy model has ignited significant controversy in Madeira, as regional leaders and political parties express strong opposition. The new model, which incorporates criteria that exclude individuals with debts to the state from receiving subsidies, has been described as an affront to the constitutional rights of Madeiran residents.

Filipe Sousa, a deputy from the Juntos Pelo Povo (JPP) party, celebrated the unanimous decision by the Commission of Infrastructure, Mobility and Housing (CIMH) to summon the Minister of Infrastructure and Housing, Miguel Pinto Luz, for an urgent hearing. The hearing aims to address the contentious changes to the mobility subsidy regime.

The Government of Madeira has officially demanded a revision of these exclusion criteria, labeling them as a "gross affront to the Constitution of the Portuguese Republic." They argue that the policy unfairly discriminates against residents of the Portuguese islands, undermining their equal rights as citizens.

Adding to the political tension, the CDS party has announced its intention to challenge the new subsidy model at the Constitutional Court. They argue that the requirement for residents to prove they have no tax or social security debts to access the subsidy violates constitutional principles such as proportionality and equality.

This issue is critical for both residents and tourists, as the subsidy plays a vital role in reducing the high costs of air travel between Madeira, the Azores, and mainland Portugal. The outcome of this debate could significantly impact the accessibility and affordability of travel to and from the island, affecting local tourism and economy.

As the political debate intensifies, Madeirans await a resolution that will uphold their rights and ensure fair access to mobility subsidies, which are essential for maintaining connectivity with the mainland.
