Community Mourns the Loss of Esteemed Residents in Madeira

Madeira Island is currently enveloped in a wave of mourning as the community bids farewell to three cherished members who have recently passed away: Manuel Coelho, Hermínia Moniz Rodrigues Alves, and José Manuel Alves Caldeira.

Manuel Coelho, a native of Santa Cruz, passed away on May 9, 2026. Known for his strong familial bonds, Manuel leaves behind a loving family including his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. His funeral was held on the morning of May 10 at the Igreja Matriz de Santa Cruz, followed by interment at the local cemetery. A memorial mass will also be held on the upcoming Saturday.

Hermínia Moniz Rodrigues Alves, a long-time resident of Santa Cruz's Rua dos Moinhos, died on May 8, 2026. Her funeral took place on May 9, with services held at the Igreja Matriz de Santa Cruz. Hermínia's family expressed gratitude to the staff of Casa da Sagrada Família for their compassionate care during her final days. A seventh-day mass is planned for this Saturday.

José Manuel Alves Caldeira, from Machico, passed on May 8, 2026. His funeral was conducted on May 10, beginning at the Funeral Home in Machico and concluding with a cremation at the Cemitério de Nossa Senhora das Angústias in São Martinho. The family extended their thanks to the medical staff at Hospital Dr. Nélio Mendonça for their dedicated care.

The families of all three individuals have been deeply moved by the outpouring of support and condolences from friends and acquaintances. Each family has expressed immense gratitude for the kindness and solidarity shown during this time of sorrow.
