Madeira Island is mourning the loss of three notable residents, whose passing has deeply affected the community. Funeral services are scheduled for March 20, 2026, to honor their lives and contributions.

Madeira Island is enveloped in a collective sorrow as it mourns the passing of three esteemed members of its community: Maria de Abreu Lourenço, João Sidónio Sousa de Abreu Nabo, and Lília de Andrade de Abreu da Graça. All three funerals are set to take place on Friday, March 20, 2026, each at different locations across the island, reflecting the widespread connections and influence these individuals held within their communities.

Funeral Arrangements

The funeral of Maria de Abreu Lourenço will commence at 1:00 PM from Hospital Dr. Nélio Mendonça, proceeding to the parish church of Nossa Senhora da Ajuda in Serra de Água for a Mass at 2:00 PM, followed by burial at the local cemetery.

João Sidónio Sousa de Abreu Nabo's service will begin at 3:15 PM, also from Hospital Dr. Nélio Mendonça, moving to São Bento parish church in Ribeira Brava for a 4:00 PM Mass, before the funeral procession heads to the cemetery.

Lília de Andrade de Abreu da Graça's funeral will start at 9:30 AM from the same hospital, with a Mass at 10:30 AM in the chapel of Câmara de Lobos cemetery, followed by her interment there.

Community Response

The families of the deceased have been overwhelmed by the outpouring of condolences and support from the community. They have expressed their gratitude for the solidarity shown during this time of grief.

In accordance with local traditions, a Mass will be held seven days after each funeral to honor the deceased further, inviting community members to join in remembrance and prayer.
