CDU Warns of Potential Disasters in Madeira, Urges Preventive Measures
Madeira GuideThe CDU has issued a warning about the potential for disasters in Madeira if preventive measures are not implemented. This comes 16 years after the devastating February 20 floods that caused numerous casualties.
The Comunist Party of Madeira (CDU) has issued a stark warning that the region could face disasters even greater than those experienced on February 20, 2010, unless urgent preventive measures are taken. This announcement was made during a visit to Trapiche, Santo António, one of the areas hardest hit by the floods 16 years ago.
Edgar Silva, a representative of the CDU, highlighted that despite plans for constructing a retaining wall to protect the homes in Poço do Morgado, Trapiche, from future landslides, the project remains incomplete. The lack of action has left the area vulnerable to similar catastrophes.
The floods of February 20, 2010, were triggered by torrential rains that led to severe flash floods, mudslides, and landslides across Madeira. The disaster resulted in numerous casualties, particularly in Trapiche, making it one of the deadliest events in the region's recent history.
The CDU's visit aimed to remind the public and authorities of the importance of fulfilling commitments to infrastructure projects that can prevent future tragedies. The party stressed the urgency of completing the retaining wall to safeguard the residents of Trapiche from potential natural disasters.
Madeira, a popular tourist destination known for its stunning landscapes and vibrant culture, relies heavily on the safety and well-being of its residents and visitors. Ensuring that infrastructure is in place to handle natural disasters is crucial to maintaining its reputation and attractiveness as a safe holiday location.
