On January 31, 2026, Madeira experienced a series of vehicle-related incidents that disrupted local traffic. These events included a car fire on the expressway near Serra de Água and two separate accidents in Funchal.

Car Fire Near Serra de Água

The first incident occurred around 6:30 PM when a car caught fire on the expressway near Serra de Água, just before the Encumeada tunnel. The fire prompted the immediate response of the Voluntary Firefighters from Ribeira Brava and Ponta do Sol. Fortunately, by the time the firefighters arrived with two vehicles and seven personnel, the flames had already been extinguished.

Accident at the Hospital Roundabout

Earlier that morning at approximately 5:30 AM, an accident took place at the roundabout near the hospital in Funchal. A car flipped onto its side, but the driver, a man in his 30s, managed to escape without serious injuries. The Funchal Fire Brigade, consisting of 11 personnel and three vehicles, attended the scene and transported the driver to Dr. Nélio Mendonça Hospital for further evaluation.

Car Crash and Fire on Estrada do Lazareto

Another incident was reported later at Estrada do Lazareto in Funchal, where a car veered off the road, collided with a wall, and subsequently caught fire. The driver sustained a head injury and was attended to by the Voluntary Firefighters of Madeira, who dispatched 10 personnel and two vehicles to the scene.
