ARDITI has announced the launch of an international project, IMPLAMAC_CAP, aimed at strengthening microplastic monitoring in the Macaronesia region, including Madeira, Azores, Canary Islands, Cape Verde, and Senegal.

The Regional Agency for the Development of Research, Technology, and Innovation (ARDITI) is set to unveil a new international initiative named 'IMPLAMAC_CAP' on February 23 at the Colégio dos Jesuítas Auditorium in Funchal. This project is designed to enhance and implement methodologies for monitoring microplastics across the Macaronesia region.

Coordinated by the University of La Laguna, the project brings together a consortium of institutions from the Canary Islands, Azores, Madeira, Cape Verde, and Senegal. It also includes participation from regional organizations involved in environmental policy-making.

This effort is crucial for the Macaronesia region, which is particularly vulnerable to microplastic pollution due to its geographical location and oceanic currents. Enhancing microplastic monitoring will help in understanding the impact on marine ecosystems and aid in developing strategies to combat pollution.

Microplastics, small plastic particles less than five millimeters in size, pose a significant threat to marine life and, consequently, to the fishing and tourism industries vital to Madeira's economy. This project aims to create a standardized approach to assess and manage the problem effectively.

The event in Funchal will gather experts and stakeholders from various regions to discuss the project's goals and expected outcomes. It offers an opportunity for collaborative learning and innovation in tackling microplastic pollution.
