In a decisive victory, André Ventura, leader of the Chega party, has emerged as the leading candidate in the presidential elections held in São Vicente and Porto Santo, Madeira.

In the recent presidential elections, André Ventura, the leader of the Chega party, achieved significant victories in the Madeira regions of São Vicente and Porto Santo. His success in these key areas highlights the growing influence of the Chega party in local politics.

São Vicente Results

In São Vicente, a municipality in the northern part of Madeira, Ventura received a commanding 43.59% of the votes. This result is more than twice the share garnered by his closest competitor, António José Seguro, who received 18.58%.

Following Seguro, Marques Mendes captured 15.74% of the vote, while João Cotrim de Figueiredo and Gouveia e Melo obtained 10.16% and 6.61%, respectively. Ventura's victory in São Vicente underscores Chega's expanding presence in the region, which is now politically aligned with the party.

Porto Santo Results

On the island of Porto Santo, Ventura also emerged victorious, securing 33.71% of the votes. Although António José Seguro was a strong contender with 24.78% of the votes, Ventura managed to maintain a decisive lead.

In Porto Santo, Marques Mendes and João Cotrim de Figueiredo received 12.81% and 12.22% of the votes, respectively. Notably, the voter turnout on the island was relatively low, with an abstention rate of 47%.

Implications for Madeira

The victories in São Vicente and Porto Santo are indicative of a shifting political landscape in Madeira, where Chega's right-wing policies seem to resonate with a significant portion of the electorate. This could lead to changes in local governance and influence future policy directions on the islands.

Madeira, known for its picturesque landscapes and as a popular tourist destination, is now witnessing a political evolution that may impact its cultural and economic dynamics. As the island continues to attract international attention, the political developments here are of interest to both residents and tourists who visit this Atlantic archipelago.
