Madeira's main airport will undergo expansion to handle increasing passenger numbers, with new gates and improved facilities planned for completion in 2026.

Cristiano Ronaldo International Airport, Madeira's gateway to the world, is set for a major expansion project that will transform the passenger experience and significantly increase capacity. The €120 million investment reflects growing demand for travel to this Atlantic paradise.

Meeting Growing Demand

In 2023, the airport handled over 4.2 million passengers, a record number that strained existing facilities during peak periods. The expansion project aims to increase annual capacity to 6 million passengers, ensuring comfortable travel experiences for years to come.

The project includes construction of a new terminal wing with 8 additional boarding gates, expanded security screening areas, and modernized baggage handling systems. Passengers will also benefit from new retail and dining options, including a food court celebrating local Madeiran cuisine.

Improved Accessibility

A key focus of the expansion is enhanced accessibility. The new facilities will exceed current European standards for passengers with reduced mobility, featuring dedicated assistance counters, accessible restrooms throughout, and improved wayfinding for visually impaired travelers.

We're building an airport that Madeira can be proud of – one that provides world-class service while reflecting the warm hospitality our island is known for.

Sustainability Initiatives

The expansion incorporates cutting-edge sustainability features. Solar panels will be installed across the new terminal roof, and rainwater harvesting systems will supply irrigation for landscaping. Electric ground service equipment will replace diesel vehicles, reducing emissions significantly.
