The Associação Sem Limites has raised concerns over accessibility violations in a recent public works project on Madeira's airport road, citing legal breaches.

The Associação Sem Limites, a prominent advocacy group for individuals with special needs, has publicly denounced a recent public works project on the Estrada Regional do Aeroporto in Madeira. The organization claims the project is in violation of Decree-Law No. 163/2006, which mandates accessibility standards for public spaces.

According to the association, the responsible governmental entities, the executing company, and other relevant bodies were formally notified of these violations. However, the response has been a resounding silence, which the association describes as exclusionary and discriminatory.

The association insists that this is not merely a technical oversight but a fundamental breach of constitutional principles of equality and non-discrimination. The lack of compliance directly impacts individuals with disabilities and those with limited mobility, they argue.

In a strong statement, the association emphasized that accessibility is a legally enshrined right rather than a political option or administrative favor. They demand immediate public clarification, rectification of the irregularities, and accountability from those responsible for overseeing, executing, and supervising the project.

The incident highlights ongoing challenges in ensuring compliance with accessibility laws in public infrastructure projects in Madeira, a popular tourist destination known for its picturesque landscapes and vibrant culture.

"When the government itself ignores the legislation it is legally bound to enforce, it loses the moral authority to demand compliance from its citizens," the association stated.
