Discover the festive spirit of Madeira as locals and tourists alike gather to celebrate the New Year with a blend of cultural traditions, maritime spectacles, and historic sail training ships.

The picturesque island of Madeira ushered in the New Year with a vibrant showcase of cultural events and maritime activities that captivated both residents and tourists. From the traditional Bolo de Rei to the arrival of majestic cruise liners, Madeira's festive spirit was in full display.

A Sweet Celebration in Câmara de Lobos

On January 9th, 2026, the charming town of Câmara de Lobos was abuzz with excitement as locals gathered to enjoy the Bolo de Rei, or king cake, a staple during the Epiphany celebrations. The festivities were complemented by chocolate cups of cherry liqueur, adding a sweet touch to the event.

Maritime Spectacles at Funchal's Harbor

Funchal’s harbor was a hub of activity as the Norwegian sail training ship, Christian Radich, docked at the CR7 quay. Built in 1937, this historic vessel captivated onlookers with its majestic presence. Alongside it were the P&O cruise ship Azura and AIDAcosma, adding to the maritime grandeur.

In the midst of the celebrations, the harbor also witnessed the arrival of the MSC Musica, a cruise liner that graced Madeira's shores on December 27, 2025. Its presence marked a significant moment for the island's tourism sector, promising a prosperous year ahead.

A Stormy New Year’s Eve

Despite the blustery weather brought by Storm Francis, Funchal lit up with spectacular fireworks, signaling the start of 2026. The storm's strong winds and rains did little to dampen the spirits of those celebrating, as the skies above Funchal illuminated in vibrant colors.

These events not only highlight Madeira's rich cultural heritage but also its resilience and welcoming nature, offering a unique blend of tradition, hospitality, and beauty that attracts visitors from around the globe.
